Heart Freedom: Living God’s Love

We are called to love others as Christ has loved us.

John 13:34 says, “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.” (NLT)

Our Lord calls us to “love God completely, ourselves correctly and others compassionately” (as author Ken Boa expresses it).  When we take this command seriously, we realize how often we fall short of His standard.  We recognize our deep need to receive more of God’s love so we can live like Him.  Paul encourages the Colossians that living in the peace of Christ is to be our normal state.  (Colossians 3:15a)

Once we accept His peace ruling our inner life, we learn to recognize more quickly when we are not experiencing it. In this course we discuss that the way we grow in that experience and develop our relationship with God is by beginning to actively listen to Him.

In Heart Freedom 1 we take the command to love seriously, looking at common unloving behaviors like comparison and competition, and considering how to replace them with acceptance and appreciation.  We not only talk about how to let God’s love grow in our hearts and lives, we also learn some simple ways to help this happen.

During this course we also look at the analogy of living in a 2-story house.  This illustration helps give us a clearer picture of why it may seem we turn into a different person when we encounter difficult circumstances.  There are times that unconsciously remind us of problems we faced in our early years (that are now stored in our emotional “basement”) and are only brought up when the tension in our life is increased. We see that the ungodly behaviors, that seem so resistant to change, are really our (ineffective) solutions to deeper problems caused by the lies that we believe in our hearts.
